INTERNATIONAL INITIATIVES OF TAJIKISTAN

Proclaiming the 2003 as the International Year of Freshwater.

On October 1, 1999, the President of Tajikistan launched this initiative at the 54th session of the UN General Assembly. The initiative was supported on September 20, 2000, at the 55th session of the UN General Assembly by the Resolution proclaiming the 2003 as the International Year of Freshwater. The International Forum on Freshwater was held on August 29 – September 1, 2003, in Dushanbe.

Proclaiming the years 2005-2015 as the International Decade for Action- Water for Life.
In accordance with the Dushanbe Declaration, on December 23, 2003, the General Assembly adopted a corresponding resolution regarding the proclamation of the 2005-2015 as the International Decade for Action- Water for Life.

Providing freshwater to the Central Asian countries by creating the International Consortium on the use of water from the Sarez lake.
Creation of the International Fund for the Protection of Glaciers.
In 2009, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan had announced this initiative twice at the Third Global Environment Forum (August 31 – September 4) in Geneva and at the 15th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (December 7-8) in Copenhagen.

Building peace and security in Afghanistan through economic and social reconstruction. In implementing this initiative, the Aga Khan Foundation and the U.S. Government built five large and small bridges across the river that played a significant role in solving the problems of people living in the border areas by providing jobs, obtaining medical services in Tajik clinics and ensuring the availability of essential products.
Proclaiming the 2013 as the International Year of Water Cooperation (December 20, 2010). In accordance with this initiative, a High-Level International Conference on Water Cooperation was held on August 20-21, 2013, in Dushanbe. Following the conference documents listed below were adopted:
– The Dushanbe Declaration at the High-Level International Conference on Water Cooperation.

– The Dushanbe Framework Program for Action on Water Cooperation.

– The corollary by the Chairman of the High-Level International Conference on Water Cooperation for furthering cooperation.

Establishing the Regional Mine Action Center.
8. On December 21, 2016, the UN General Assembly adopted a Resolution titled the International Decade for Action – Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028. The Resolution was proposed by the initiative of Tajikistan with co-authorship of 177 UN member states.
